Dark Era: Dazai and Akutagawa
The Scene in Dark Era where Dazai shoots Akutagawa was abusive and messed up, but sadly justified on Dazai's end.
Now this may sound harsh but let's take a step back from the emotions the scene causes and look at it purely logical and analytical. (No I am not excusing the abuse Akutagawa went through. Dazai had no right to abuse him but this scene is more than abuse.)
What happens in this scene?
Per Dazai's orders as an Executive within the Port Mafia agents from Mimic were captured to be taken to Kouyou for interrogation, as is her department. Akutagawa then kills the hostages in retaliation for the casualties the Mafia suffered at the hands of Mimic. Dazai proceeds to punch and shoot Akutagawa.
In essence this is what happened: Akutagawa disregarded direct orders of his executive in front of multiple people and said executive. Plain and simple, this is insubordination.
We know, due to Stormbringer, that insubordination of the Boss and his executives (who essentially work as extensions of the Boss within the BSD Mafia) is a death sentence. It's at the same level as betrayal.
So, while messed up and abusive, Dazai's reaction can be classified as a mercy. Had it been another executive or Mori, Akutagawa would be dead. And no, you can not use that Chuuya cares for Akutagawa as an argument against Akutagawa dying here were it Chuuya. Chuuya's loyality is to the Mafia and Mori in a situation like this. We saw this at the end of the Guild Arc when Chuuya asked Mori what punishment Akutagawa should face for disregarding Mafia orders and going on to the Moby Dick. Since the moment in Dark Era is a similar case, it is safe to assume Chuuya would have asked Mori for the punishment and then delivered it.
Now here comes the much more interesting part about this scene I sadly do not see talked about. (If you find posts talking about it please send them my way!)
This scene shows us, in a very subtle way, how the dynamic between Akutagawa and Dazai works.
But how? Let's count it: - Akutagawa is very self assured in his insubordination. - Dazai gives him a chance to speak up about his reasoning, to defend himself and ask for forgiveness for his blatant insubordination. - Akutagawa in turn arrogantly doubles down on his decision. - Dazai punishes him.
While Dazai framed the moment at the end as a teaching moment with his comment about Akutagawas use of Rashomon, it is mostly a punishment. Yes there are 2 moments that can be seen as a teaching moment but what Dazai does is in fact nothing more than a punishment in his eyes.
(Giving Akutagawa the chance to think about his rash action was the first teaching moment btw)
Now the way the scene is handeled with it's framing tells us something interesting about the relationship between Dazai and Akutagawa.
Dazai actively favours Akutagawa with his treatment.
But how? It's a good question because the answer is very much hidden.
Both characters treat the situation as something usual. This in turn tells us that Akutagawa often commits insubordination against Dazai. And only Dazai, since Dazai takes him under his wing as his direct and only student. (This is made clear in the short where he actually recruits a younger Akutagawa) This means that Dazai does favour his student above other subordinates rather openly. We know he would not let this slide with other people under his command. The scene at the beginning of the Dark Era LN with Hirotsu shows this.
Akutagawa's reaction to being shot also tells us that this is the first time Dazai points a weapon at him. While not expecting, but accepting, the punch he did not expect to face a harsher punishment than this.
He is visibly surprised. But not just him.
In the Anime adaption (which is the best LN adaption in BSD) we see that even the other subordinates around them only become surprised when Dazai draws the gun and shoots Akutagawa.
Did Dazai think Akutagawa would survive being shot at? 100% yes. He even says as much after the fact.
(This is actually what makes teaching moment number 2, since he remarks that Akutagawa "finally" managed to protect himself with Rashomon. This tells us that they were actively training this and Akutagawa was failing at it for some time already.)
In short: - Akutagawa feels very much secure in his position at Dazai's side, despite the regular abuse. - Dazai favours Akutagawa openly enough within the PM that other subordinates are surprised when Akutagawa faces an openly harsh punishment. - Akutagawa, in committing insubordination, regulary disrespects Dazai as his superior and Dazai let's it slide. This is something that mirrors the relationship between Dazai and Mori, as Dazai does disrespect Mori in private and Mori let's this slide. (The biggest difference in this relationship mirror is that Dazai never disrespects Mori in front of other people.)
In my eyes (and I hope we learn more soon) this also shows that Dazai's abuse of Akutagawa has multiple reasons. - Dazai sees himself in Akutagawa. Dazai also hates himself and blames himself for shortcomings so he projects this onto Akutagawa, who he then abuses because of it. - A warped sense of care. In his own, very fucked up, way Dazai does care for Akutagawa. Is he good at showing it? Absolutely not. He wants Akutagawa to be stronger than Dazai himself is, he wants him to be better. So he favors him but also abuses him. - He favors Akutagawa so Akutagawa needs to get strong extremely fast to avoid a conflict within the ranks of the Mafia. - Dazai tries to get Akutagawa as strong as possible as fast as possible since Akutagawa effectively went from joining to third highest rank in 10 seconds and needs to prove himself in front of everyone else, not just Dazai's eyes. In this he ends up abusing Dazai because he himself is a child with a very limited understanding of teaching. What he does know, through Mori as his teacher, is that cruelty and abuse are effective teaching methods that work faster than proving patience and taking things slow.
(am I saying that Mori physically abused Dazai? No. But he, as shown in Beast and Fifteen, honestly answers to the questions his students ask him. It is entirely possible that he simply told Dazai different teaching methods and Dazai decided on the fastest one instead of the best and most effective.)
and thank you @sorcerersandskillusers for sending me the LN parts I mentioned above!! I didn't have the energy to look them up when I initially posted this and he did me the favor of getting them for me!
To summarize: The scene is a punishment for direct insubordination and shows us, the viewer, a deeper look into the relationship between Akutagawa and Dazai.

Bsd but it’s all quotes from random movies/books
Some of the quotes are modified to better fit lol.
Dazai: Fine, but if he kills us all, I’m going to get Atsushi’s ghost to teach my ghost how to play the flute just so that I can annoy the hell out of your ghost
Ranpo: I’ll just hire Chuuya’s ghost to kick your ass
Chuuya: My ghost won’t associate with your ghosts.
————
Atsushi: Dazai is… I don’t know, he’s like nobody else I’ve ever known. He surprises me.
Kunikida: Yeah, like a hive of bees in your dresser drawer
————
Akutagawa: All right, any idea where Chuuyas going?
Atsushi: To kill someone.
Akutagawa: Ah. That explains the anger, and the corruption, and all that. Good. Makes perfect sense, now what? Atsushi, come on. I'm 147 pounds of pale skin and fragile bone, okay? Sarcasm is my only defense.
————
Dazai: I’ve got an idea
Kunikida: Does it involve breaking the law?
Dazai: By now don’t you think that’s a given?
Kunikida: I was just trying to be optimistic.
Dazai: Don’t bother
————
Mori: Wait, everyone here’s a dude! I think we’re in a gay club!
Kouyou, surrounded by drag queens: Man, nothing gets past those keen mafia boss senses..
————
Atsushi: You sure everything's okay between you and Chuuya?
Dazai: Yeah, everything's fine. Dammit, the cops took my fake ID..
Atsushi: You didn't do anything to make him angry?
Dazai: How angry?
Atsushi: A scale of one to ten. One being "kind of irritated" and ten... and ten "wanting to kill you violently”
Dazai, laughing: Chuuya’s kind of always at a four, but we’re good.
————
Fukuzawa, looking at Poe in the corner: Who is he again?
Ranpo: Uh..My cousin.. Miguel..
Fukuzawa:
Poe:
Ranpo: Aha..
————
Mori: I want you to be completely honest with me. Totally and completely honest. Have you been time traveling?
Teen Dazai: Hang on, what?
Mori: Because if time traveling is real, I'm done, I'm out. You're going to be driving me to the nursing home.
Teen Chuuya: We found him like that.
Mori: Where? Swimming in the fountain of youth?!
Teen Dazai: No. We found him buried in a glowing tomb in an Azetec temple in Mexico underneath a church in the middle of a town that was destroyed by an earthquake.
————
Atsushi: Shouldn’t someone give like, a pep talk?
Dazai: Probably. Go ahead, Ranpo.
Ranpo: Oh. Ok, Be careful. Don’t die.
————
Teen Dazai, after a mission: It looked like an experiment gone terribly wrong - something from a nightmare. Part animal, part demon, he rolled and clicked along the stone pathway. Its body resembled a short slug-
Teen Chuuya: sTOP TALKING ABOUT ME LIKE THAT, YOU PEICE OF SHIT!
————
Dazai, running by: If anyone asks where I am, I’ve left the country!
Atsushi: ok WHAT THE FUCK
————
Ranpo, frantically: Do you know anything about sensory deprivation tanks? Specifically how to build one?
Fukuzawa: Sensory deprivation– What is this for?
Dazai in the background: ..Fun..
————
Atsushi: You know what this half-baked plan of yours sounds like to me? Child endangerment. I’m out.

If Akugatawa became a vampire at within 6 minutes of his injury, he might have still been alive. Essentially you would cure his vampirism and then make Yosano heal him
But before that, Bram and Aya join the Agency and Aku is with them, so Mori has a choice of gaining someone new and loosing Aku or just taking Aku back to the Port Mafia... No one leaves the Agency.
Happy end

Heyyy would be be able to do a part 2 of the most to least likely to paint their nails with the port mafia :)))))
A/N: This took very long to make but thank you for your patience! I was going to add more character from the PM but i was having a really hard time writing them. So I settled for the chatracrers I liked most(beside mori cuz hes on thin fuckin ice) anyways, here is part one with the ada! Link
Characters: Chuuya, Odasaku, Mori and Akugatawa(bsd)
!Warning! none!
Nail Painting Hcs with the Port mafia!
Chuuya does not give a single fuck about what anyone says. We all know that this man is brimming with confidence, so I doubt he’ll have any qualms about it. Chuuya sees this as a bonding moment for you both. Away from the mayhem of the Mafia. It's definitely a self-care type of date. You both have face and hair masks on and are in the most comfortable/luxurious sleepwear money can buy, with a large spread of your favorite foods and your fave movie or music playing in the background. And ofc the most expensive wine Chuuya has. If your highly skilled Chuuya wants the sharpest nails you have. If not them he’ll settle with something nice and simple. Maybe a dark red or black(he might ask for you to fade it from black to red at the tip) or a nice blue to match his eyes. He’s not a big fan of the smell(like he doesn’t deal with blood all the time) but he enjoys seeing your smiling face as you talk about your day with him.
I’m adding, the love of my life, Odasaku to the mix because I can and he’s still alive in my mind- Anyways, this is another man that finds the activity as bonding time, but not just between you and him, no, but as a family! It was definitely your and Sakura’s idea to paint his nails. Let's just say that you and Oda were finding glitter everywhere afterwards for days! Odasaku buys the best nail polishes and equipment for it, the variety of color is huge! You know those little stickers they use sometimes for your nails, well he buys so many cute ones that you and Sakura have trouble choosing from. (her favorite is the little bears with hearts and Odas are the cats with glasses) He definitely doesn’t care about the color, so he lets you and Sakura pick it out(you both usually settle for pink or purple) Sometimes the boys will join and either paint your nails or have you paint theirs. Either way, you and your weird little family have the best nails in Yokohama.
Mori would do anything to keep you happy, and if letting you paint his nails does the trick then so be it! It was most likely your and Elise's idea and it was more her demanding for Mori to let you both paint his nails then you. It’s definitely a funny sight to see the feared Mafia Boss submit to a 10 year old. Anyways, Mori, like Oda, buys you and Elise everything you need. He even buys little bows and diamonds(you wouldn’t be surprised if they were real) to put on his nails, though he buys them with Elise and you in mind. But he’s in for a surprise, because the next time any of the Port Mafia Executives see him his nails are bright pink with pastel pink bows on his nails(all courtesy of Elise ofc) He likes these moments because it really does look like you and Mori are married and Elise is your child. It's oddly domestic. Though Mori has to scrub everything off before anyone of his meetings with other groups, cuz you know he is a Mafia Boss. You caught him once and he was almost on his knees begging you not to Elise because he couldn’t even imagine her sad face. Lets just say you got everything you wanted for the next month.
Our little Diablo is very reluctant. Akutagawa is just awkward with intimacy in general, not that this is very intimate to begin with but you get the point. But when I tell you the satisfaction you’ll feel after he agrees is just... chef’s kiss- Aku prefers simple solid colors. Whites, greys and blacks are his go-to and preferred colors. I like to imagine after you and Aku started painting each other's nails more often, he’ll start to moisturize his hands more so they’re not as rough. Speaking of him painting your nails, he’ll get irritated if the paint ends up touching your skin or it’s not smooth. You’ll have to reassure him that it happens and it can be fixed because he’ll sulk about it. Much like Atsushi, Akutagawa can’t stand the smell of the chemicals, so odorless nail polish or having him wear a mask is the way to go. Or else he’ll be a coughing mess. Sometimes Gin will join in and it's the most pleasant time, because the Akutagawa siblings are both quiet beings. It's highly relaxing to be around them. I like to think there is jazz playing in the back while you all just talk with each other. Aku really enjoys seeing the most important people in his life interact with each other, but he won’t say it outloud.

BSD current arc rant [spoilers]
I’m not sure how to feel about this current arc tbh. I can’t help but feel itchy about it.
There are a lof of things that I like, obviously, like The Hunting Dogs, and the Decay of Angels, I also love that Lucy gets to work with the Agency and such.
But I just think that it is too much. Too much going on, too much happening to the main cast (Yosano’s trauma, Kunikida losing his hands, Tachihara being a Hunting Dog, Fukuchi being the DOA leader, Akutagawa’s “death”, damn vampires, etc).
The solution and goal of this arc is getting the page of the book and erase everything. And that solution doesn’t sit well with me. Why so many fucked up things just to erase everything?
If there is something I resent in this manga is the lack of consequences for the protagonists and main cast for their actions. The only one that had faced some kind of consequences is Kunikida, when he ended up in jail at the end of the Cannibal arc. But the ADA operated normally, their dinamic never changed a bit from the beggining, same with the Port Mafia.
This arc’s actions are set up for consequences; Dazai being in prision and Yosano’s and Kyouka’s charges for their past actions. Kunikida losing his hands and not being able to use his ability...
And I was super excited with the Kunikida one, thingking we could get into an character arc for him, but the solution was presented to us like to chapters later; Yosano’s ability. With Dazai being in prision and Yosano and Kyouka’s charges, just as Akutagawa’s “death” and the ADA being set up as terrorist, the solution is to get the page. With the page, you can erase everything, and it would be stupid for them to not erase everything if they get it.
Why make your character pass through so much, why creating a whole desperate narrative just to it ending up not mattering at all? While I do believe that even if the ADA gets the page and changes everything, there would be a change in the dinamic and characters (and I love that), it’s not going to go on-pair with all the things happening in this arc.
Up until now, we keep getting new enemies, which are super amazing I must say, but there are already too many enemies, there are too many things to worry about, and the main cast is getting sidelined by them.
I mean, Kenji and Tanizaki are nobody-knows-where, Naomi is missing since the arc started, Lucy and Kyouka just dissapeared, The Mafia is just chilling there, the ADA is doing nobody-knows-what, and The Guild is drinking tea. Margaret is STILL on a coma, only god-knows-where. We already had so much “plot-holes” with some characters like Steinbeck and Melville who’s narrative left desiring more, or the ADA and the Mafia’s pact of one ADA member going to the Mafia.
And I know Atsushi’s the protagonist, and he’s awesome at that I love him, but I feel like Asagiri doesn’t use his characters enough, like he sacrifices their pagetime and development in order to create new characters, who are awesome sure, but too many at the same time. (Just this arc we got the Fukuchi, Teruko, Teccho, Jouno, Gogol, Sigma, Mushitaro and Bram Stoker). And we know more about Sigma than Kenji or Tanizaki tbh. There’s just so many things going on to have only one narrative point. And I hate how Dazais is coded to “know everything” because it’s just so bullshit at this point. I hate how Dazai is supposed to know everything and be so perfect that he counters it since prision
I can’t even begin to care about Akugatawa being dead lol Because nobody dies in BSD (Oda died in a Light Novel, it’s different okay). And now the mafia are a bunch of vampires.
I just can’t see the solution being enough for everything that’s going on. I just can’t, and it makes me feel awful because I love BSD, and I love Asagiri and I love every new character there is. Ugh.

I initially thought Dazai wore bandages for wounds from suicide attempts, so I was confused when his left eye turned out be uninjured beneath the bandage Odasaku pulled from his face. (Wouldn’t covering up one eye affect his depth perception?) Your post about Dazai’s bandages providing protection from the outside world and representing invisible emotional wounds helped me recognize the symbolic meaning of that scene.
Odasaku tells Dazai that he will never find a reason to live in bloodshed and nothing will fill the hole inside him. Thus, in removing the bandage from his eye, Odasaku is opening Dazai’s eyes to the truth. However, what makes this revelation unconventional is, according to Odasaku, Dazai already knows this to be true. Odasaku therefore removes the blindfold Dazai deliberately placed upon himself.
Odasaku “rips off the bandaid,” so to speak, in forcing Dazai to confront this painful truth. Odasaku lays bare his vulnerabilities in more ways than one, for in dying, he’s opening another wound in Dazai. Odasaku also frees Dazai from Mori, from the Port Mafia, from the self-imposed “blind eye” to his own insecurities. Reinforcing the permanence of this newfound freedom, Dazai doesn’t replace the bandages Odasaku removed.
However, even after joining the Agency, Dazai retains the remaining bandages along with his suicidal tendencies (though they’re now played for comedy). Like you said, Dazai needs to accept the responsibility and vulnerability that comes with human connections. Once he achieves that, I think Atsushi will be the one to remove the bandages from one arm while Akutagawa removes the bandages from the other.
I don’t think it’s coincidence that Atsushi and Akutagawa often appear at either side of Dazai’s arms (when Dazai nullifies their powers during their alley fight; when Dazai keeps them apart to prevent them from fighting on the way to Pushkin’s hideout; in official art—sorry, I don’t know how to add links in asks).
In keeping with their yin-yang motif, they pull Dazai in opposite directions (Atsushi representing his new life in the Agency-which Koyo referred to as “the light”-while Akugatawa signifies his dark past in the Port Mafia). Rather than rip him apart, however, Atsushi and Akutagawa together form a balancing force that grounds Dazai to the world of human connection he tries to distance himself from.
As for the bandages on his neck and torso, I think it would be poetic if Dazai were to remove them himself, thereby signifying his acceptance of his role as the central link in the relationship between his two mentees.—BSD Chat Anon
I love your thoughts here!!! And yes, Dazai needs to reconcile his Port Mafia and AMA selves at some point, likely through Akutagawa and Chuuya for the PM. And I definitely hope you’re right about the bandages!! This is a fanastic meta, Chat Anon!

Rules: list your top 5 favorite anime characters and then tag 10 people
Tagged by @inkantigen thanks for tagging me!!
I’m going with two from BSD, and then characters from other animes so you can get a glimpse of other fandoms I’m passionate about.
1. Akugatawa Ryuunosuke [BSD]
Obviously, Akutagawa is my current fav. I love his development on the show, but I think the reason I really fell in love with this character is his refusal to give up. No matter, what comes he keeps getting up and he keeps moving forward.
2. Higuchi Ichiyou [BSD]
I don’t nearly ramble about her as often as I should. I love how she was portrayed in the beginning. She’s very emotional and also very transparent when it comes to those emotions. At the same time, she’s a strong woman who can be ruthless and is just as dangerous as everyone else in the Port Mafia. Also, I loved the fact that she saved her crush and instead of being saved be him.
3. Rokudo Mukuro [KHR]
KHR was probably my first big anime love, and I still appreciate the story and the characters. Mukuro is the smug asshole villain type, that I love. But what really made him my favorite character in the show, was the loyalty he inspired in his people and the loyalty he gave them in return.
4. Ichinomiya Kantarou [Tactics]
The mangaka from tactics also drew the first mange I ever owned so I have a few nostalgic feelings about that. But other than that, I relate so much to him? He’s very goal-oriented, and he would do anything for his friends, even though he usually downplays how much they mean to him.
5. Tsukishima Kei [HQ]
He’s a snarky shit and I love him. In the beginning, I didn’t like him that much, but he grew on me and now he’s my favorite from the show.
I’m tagging @yinghvo @bandaged-chessmaster @phoenixfireblade @dazai @lefterstein @myrrh and whoever wants to do it. That’s not ten people but I’m not good at that, okay

BSD Chapter 51 Summary
A bit of summary for the new chapter. It took me a lot of time to just read through this cuz there’re so many texts and many difficult kanjis that I have never seen before. But the chapter is nice and I am so in love with Dazai and Shinsoukoku’s reaction. As usual, please note that I might make some mistakes with my translation (I mostly will!!) because my Japanese is limited. Kindly correct me if you spot anything that is incorrect! Thanks <3
SPOILERS AHEAD
- Based on the information he got from Natsume sensei in the last chapter, Dazai and Kunikida set off to Fyodor’s base. It’s located in an old mine which is equipped with sensors and traps and all the other equipments that would prevent ability users. They took Atsushi and Akutagawa with them. Dazai mentioned the first priority is to capture the virus user and second is Fyodor.
- Atsushi was quite concerned about this collaboration and told Dazai it’s not going to work cuz Akutagawa hates him so much. But turns out Akutagawa is very obedient with everything Dazai says lol. (TN: I never deny that Dazai is such a manipulative guy lol, but the way he motivates Akutagawa is kinda like the way a father would motivate his son too xDD).
Dazai: “You were my subordinate 4 years ago right? I wonder if you can show me that you could do a little better now?”
Aku: Yeah.
Atsu: Well Akutagawa? Your name is Akugatawa right?
Aku: Yeah
Atsu: Do you know that you will have to fight alongside with me?
Aku: Yeah
Atsu: What did you eat last night?
Aku: Yeah
(TN: He’s just so focused lol)
- After the 2 managed to get into the mine without being noticed by the guards, Aku told Atsushi that he doesn’t need him at all, and that this is one in 4 year chance for him to prove his ability to Dazai (TN: I mean why are you so obsessed with aknowledgement Aku? orz) and then maybe he can just kill off Atsushi. Atsushi got angry with Aku and told Aku that the only thing in his head is killing the enemy and “No wonder why Dazai san cast you away and disappeared” (TN: no no no Atsushi why you said such cruel words T_T) This turned a switch on Aku which Atsushi was sure he would be killed, but Aku just said nothing and kept moving.
- They then heard someone’s voice through the tunnel so Aku decided to capture them to mine for information. But the two guards say they don’t know anything about Fyodor’s whereabout. Aku so wants to kill them off but Atsushi stops him, saying he’s like a lawn mower lol, and again “because you only think about that you will be thrown away by Dazai san” (TN: He’s got Aku’s weak point, hasn’t he? xDD). Then Aku was like “I’m gonna make you into a tiger skin rug after this”, to which Atsushi was like “I’m gonna teach you some other stuff rather than ‘kill’ “ xDD
- One of the guards then pointed them to a place which they think might be where Fyodor is hiding and took them there.
- Meanwhile, Fyodor is talking to a mafia member who reported to him about the disappearance of Mori and Fukuzawa. He put a tie with explosion on the mafia member to force him to spill out the information. Fyodor later killed him off, obviously (by telling him to take off the tie by plugging off a wire but that actually activated the bomb instead)
- Back to Aku and Atsu, they reached the gate and got in contact with Katai. However due to the mine being underground making connection very bad, Katai couldn’t disable the security device. So Aku told him to just focus on finding the location of the virus user because that’s the top priority. Katai then went like “I got it bro”, to which Akutagawa said “Who’s bro with you? I’m gonna cut you off” lol
- While Katai is looking for the location of the virus user, Aku and Atsu has a little talk. Atsu asked Aku why he thought that Dazai put them together. And Aku said it’s because Dazai always choose the option with the highest rate of success and that no wonder he chose Atsushi because Atsushi is his trusted subordinate. Aku then went on saying that “If there’s thing I don’t understand, that’s why me…?” (TN: Poor babe, it’s obvious that he trusts you too!). In turn, Aku asked Atsushi why such a coward like him would risk his life to save somebody, to which Atsushi said because it’s the right thing to do.
- Their conversation is cut off when Katai informed them that the virus user is just 2meters away from them. (btw his name is Alexander Pushkin and he’s so ugly ><) That’s when one of the guards back then (who gave them info about the gate) took out a gun and shot Aku. Atsu managed to get him off the bullet line but Aku still suffered a scratch from the bullet. They were going to chase after the guy when Aku collapsed since the virus has been activated!
And that’s the end of the chapter. I can’t wait for the next one. I wonder if the virus always needs a counter part. If so, then who?
PS: I made a bunch of edits since there were so many typos orz. I typed this in a rush so please bear with me orz PS2: I realized I typed Dostoevsky in all my post instead of Fyodor lol. Just changed it. Idk I guess Dostoevsky is just more familiar to me xD
